When to use black and white

I love a good black and white shoot. But there’s an occasion where you feel a little cheated out of the full result, and that’s when you know a photo would have been truly amazing in colour. I can’t help but feel that way about Camilla Akrans’ latest work for Contributor magazine. So much do I always love Akrans’ use of dreamy, vintage colours that when they’re taken out of a shot I feel like something’s been robbed. It’s just not quite the same.

That’s not to say all fo the black and white shots in Akrans’ Contributor shoot, titled Where Joy Resides, are lacking. Some are just as beautiful, rich, and sensual as the gorgeously coloured shots. And I guess there’s the flip side of needing to mix it up a bit, to move outside of that signature colouring. But, to me at least, a great black and white shot is one that doesn’t leave you wondering what it would look like in colour. And in this case a few of Akrans’ do.
