To say the atmosphere was fraught as the audience walked into the first public Alexander McQueen runway show since his suicide this spring would be a case of very English understatement. Sarah Burton, his first assistant for the past fourteen years, has stepped up to take responsibility for continuing something more than that cold, commercial term, the “brand.” Crucially, her unenviable task is to keep alight the passion and poetics which made McQueen unique, while also assuring onlookers that she has a voice of her own.
