Giles Deacon for Emanuel Ungaro?

Could the award-winning British designer, Giles Deacon, be the man to finally turn the poisoned chalice of Ungaro into the golden goblet?

Persistent rumours have followed the sighting of Deacon, 40, with Ungaro’s owner, Asim Abdullah, and his management team, at the chic-spot, Le Relais Plaza, on Avenue Montaigne, just along the rue from the Ungaro maison, on Friday.

The rumours have become a volcano of conjecture, suggestion and educated guesswork, since this rendezvous was followed by the abrupt departure of Ungaro’s head designer, Estrella Archs, just a few weeks after she presented her autumn/winter 2010/2011 collection, her second for the luxury fashion brand.

Ungaro insiders have confirmed that Deacon is indeed in discussions regarding the position of creative director of Ungaro, one of the few French fashion houses to have a direct link to the glory days of Paris haute couture – its founder, the couturier Emanuel Ungaro, joined the famous atelier of Cristobal Balenciaga at the age of 22, and worked with the Spanish master for six years, before setting up his own house in 1965.

But is Deacon’s name the only one in the frame? Whispers suggest he is one of several on Asim Abdullah’s shortlist, a man who remains positive about creating a sustainable future for the famous French fashion label, and aims to turn a profit by 2011, despite its recent “form”.
