Is Stefano Pilati leaving YSL?

YVES SAINT LAURENT has refuted rumours that a replacement is being sought for creative director Stefano Pilati. Whispers circulating since Paris Fashion Week – which claimed that Pilati’s poor sales in ready-to-wear had made his position uncertain, depsite his success in accessories – intensified last night when Pilati failed to appear at the Metropolitan Opera Gala, YSL’s biggest event of the year in America, but the label insists all is well.

“He was busy with current work on the collection as well as the advertising campaign,” said YSL’s US spokeswoman. During dinner at the Met event last night, Valérie Hermann, the ceo of Yves Saint Laurent in America, also addressed the designer’s absence.

“Stefano Pilati, YSL’s creative director, has asked me to convey how sorry he is not to be able to join us tonight, and sends his very best wishes from Paris, where he is busy with the coming collection, ” she said. “Somebody still has to work in this company.”

A spokesperson for the brand also confirmed that Pilati, who has been at the YSL helm since Tom Ford departed in 2004, will attend the Costume Institute Gala in New York on May 3, the Daily reports, and will also showcase the YSL Cruise collection in the city.
