Zac Posen for Target Go International

23Mar10

What would make for the most desirable summer ever? That’s the question Zac Posen, the 29-year-old New Yorker and self-styled bon vivant, asked himself when designing his collection for Target Go International, debuting April 25 nationwide. Apparently, a wild rumpus with Loulou de la Falaise, Dorothy Draper, Debbie Harry, Andy Warhol, and Lou Reed, all of whom served as inspiration for the perky line of colorful day dresses and lipstick-print eveningwear. “I wanted to create electric pieces that will make any woman feel like a movie star,” says Posen, who, with his ready-to-wear, has never been one to shy away from a beaded bolero jacket or a fishtail gown. For Target, he may have slashed his prices to $199 and under, but Posen hasn’t scrimped on the fantasy details that have made his looks red-carpet magnets. He insisted on using high-end silks, stretch poly satins, and washed leathers as opposed to the usual, less luxurious fabrics. The designer is the first to make a full-length gown and tuxedo for the retail giant. He even pushed himself to come up with his first bathing suit: a retro-futuristic, Esther Williams–style two-piece halter. As for Posen’s own favorite summer? “When I was 16, just starting to work in fashion and trying to get into nightclubs with braces on,” he says. “It was so liberating to look around and see so much great fashion. That’s why I wanted to do a mass collection: So women, regardless of where they live, can be creative too.”
