CFDA Announces 2010 Awards

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN will be honoured with a posthumous CFDA Board of Directors Special Tribute award in June, it was announced in New York last night.

The British designer’s talent will be celebrated alongside that of International Award winner Christopher Bailey, Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award recipient Michael Kors and Fashion Icon Award winner Iman.

Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang and Donna Karan, meanwhile, were nominated for Womenswear Designer of the Year; Tom Ford, Michael Bastian, and Rag & Bone duo David Neville and Marcus Wainwright are up for menswear; and Alexis Bittar, Marc Jacobs and Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez of Proenza Schouler will vie for the accessory prize at the ceremony widely known as the fashion Oscars at the Lincoln Centre on June 7.

“[This] is pretty major,” Bittar told us. “After 19 years of work, I’m recognised by my peers, which is super great.”

Equally ecstatic was Jason Wu, nominated for a Swarovski Award for Womenswear alongside Joseph Altuzarra and Prabal Gurung: “The CFDA really is the pinnacle of the industry and this is such an honour,” he said.

Nearby Eddie Borgo chatted to Dana Lorenz of Fenton/Fallon (both nominated for the Swarovski Accessory Award alongside Alexander Wang), while Richard Chai – up for the Swarovski Menswear Award alongside Simon Spurr and Patrik Ervell – hung out with his BFF, Phillip Lim.

“Oh, he’s a pro – he gives me advice,” Lim, a CFDA winner, said when asked what tips he had for his newly nominated pal. “I always say ‘just make sure you look around and enjoy the moment’. It’s amazing for him – and long overdue!”

The Eleanor Lambert Award will this year go to US Vogue fashion director, Tonne Goodman. “It’s lovely to be recognised for something that you love as much we do – I have loved my job and my work and the people that I’ve worked with,” she said, as Grace Coddington beamed with approval. “I’m thrilled.”

Last night’s event, hosted by Nadja Swarovski and attended by the great and the good of the American fashion industry, took place in Diane von Furstenberg’s Meatpacking District studio on the same day that she was elected to serve a third term as CFDA president.

So glad they’re deciding to honour Lee. I’m rooting for Donna, Prabal and Michel Bastian to win…
